Lengthy, elaborately choreographed long-take sequences, the camera in perpetual motion, Aleksei German brings a baroquely dense mise-en-scene to his cinematic world building. Packing every corner of every frame, he composes across every axis of the frame, layering his images as though for a 3D camera.
Belgian filmmaker Jean Harlez with his 35mm camera, hand-build with remnants of old (American) cameras. People called it the “Harlez-Davidson”, because of the terrible noise it made.
