night photographer Brassaï claimed to gauge the length of his exposures by the time it took for his cigarette to burn down: a cheap, fast-burning Gauloise ‘jaune’ on clearer nights and a thicker, slower-burning Boyard ‘bleu’ in deeper darkness.
